South Dakota should spend opioid settlement money in the coming years to address the needs of people entering or leaving prisons and jails, according to an assessment prepared for the state Department of Social Services.
The department commissioned the $325,000 statewide needs assessment to help guide the state’s investment of settlement dollars.

RAPID CITY — A multi-agency effort to disrupt cocaine trafficking resulted in 14 total arrests of people from Colorado and the South Dakota cities of Pine Ridge, Box Elder and Rapid City, authorities announced Tuesday.
Representatives of federal, tribal, state and local agencies gathered in the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Rapid City to speak about the operation.

Another piece of federal legislation seeking funding to study a Missouri River water pipeline project in South Dakota has passed a U.S. Senate committee.
The Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources approved the Lewis & Clark Regional Water System Expansion Feasibility Study Act last week, sending it to the full Senate.

WASHINGTON — Mass voter challenges are likely to occur in the 2026 midterm elections, the Brennan Center for Justice warned Tuesday, with the potential to “undermine the democratic process.”
President Donald Trump and the Republican Party have been laying the groundwork for questioning the election process in state after state, as Trump has made “election integrity” the centerpiece of his recent domestic policy initiatives, including in a July 16 address to the nation.
